Boston Restaurants Worth Experiencing

Boston has a way of surprising me every time I explore it. Beyond the cobblestone streets and historic charm, the city is alive with restaurants that feel like destinations in themselves.

From sky-high dining rooms with a view to hidden gems with decadent interiors, here are some of my favorite spots:

Contessa

Location & Vibe

Perched atop The Newbury Boston, Contessa offers sweeping views over Back Bay and the Public Garden, with an elegant, glass-terraced dining room designed by Ken Fulk.

Cuisine & Menu

Contessa’s menu focuses on Northern Italian classics: antipasti, carpaccios, handmade pastas, bistecca Fiorentina, and standout dishes like spicy lobster capellini and squash carpaccio.

Experience & Notes

  • The wine list is extensive and curated, leaning into Italian and French bottles.
  • It’s often praised for being a special-occasion destination — the sort of place you dress up for.
  • Some guests note variability in service or table placement, so if you have a specific seating preference (window, view, etc.), it’s worth mentioning when you book.

Capri

Location & Vibe

Capri sits in Boston’s SoWa / South End district, at 500 Harrison Ave.  It blends upscale Italian ambiance with steakhouse elements, featuring a dramatic interior and multiple dining settings—including a full-service patio with fire pits.

Cuisine & Menu

The menu offers a mix of hand-rolled pastas and Italian-inspired steakhouse fare: expect coastal Italian flavors, elevated seafood, and signature dishes like rigatoni alla vodka and linguine alle vongole. Instagram

Experience & Notes

  • Because of its striking design and location, Capri is favored for both elegant dinners and indoor/outdoor ambiance.
  • Reservations are recommended, especially for evenings and weekends.
  • The setting is as part of the draw as the food, so dressing for the occasion adds to the experience.

Mariel

Location & Vibe

Mariel is a Cuban-inspired restaurant in Downtown Boston / Post Office Square, created by the same group behind Yvonne’s. The space is grand and glamorous, with high ceilings, dramatic lighting, and a sense of theatrical flair.

Cuisine & Menu

Here, you’ll find bold flavors pulled from Cuban and Latin inspiration: fresh mojitos, vibrant small plates, creative spins on classics, and a menu meant for sharing.

Experience & Notes

  • Mariel is often described as “an experience” rather than just a meal — the interior and ambiance are integral to the draw.
  • Because it’s part of the Cojeman group that also runs Yvonne’s and Coquette, you’ll see curated design and attention to detail throughout.
  • Popular for dinner, social evenings, and date nights—go when you have time to linger.

Coquette

Location & Vibe
Nestled within the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport, Coquette offers a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. The space is designed with a blend of modern elegance and classic French charm, making it an ideal setting for both intimate dinners and lively gatherings.

Cuisine & Menu
Coquette's menu draws inspiration from the Mediterranean coast, featuring fresh seafood, a stunning raw bar, and Capri-style pizzas. Notable dishes include the clams gratinée, which are baked with lobster, Gruyère, and a unique "devil spice," and the lamb meatballs, served with caper crème fraîche and harissa chili oil.

Brunch Experience
Coquette's weekend brunch is a highlight, offering an elegant twist on classic favorites. Guests can enjoy live jazz music while indulging in dishes like the Atlantic crab fondue and nonna buns. The brunch runs from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays..

Yvonne’s

Location & Vibe

Yvonne’s is known for its speakeasy-style glamour, dramatic interiors, and a blend of eclectic and elegant design. It’s often referenced as part of Boston’s upscale nightlife + dining scene, ideal for celebrations, cocktails, and nights when everything feels elevated.

Cuisine & Menu

Expect small plates, shareable dishes, and elevated takes on classic flavors—plus strong, stylish cocktails. The food often complements the vibe more than dominates it.

Experience & Notes

  • One of the big draws is the ambiance—perfect lighting, plush seating, and photo-worthy corners.
  • Great for dinner & drinks, especially if you want somewhere with energy and style.
  • Because of the popularity, reservations are wise, and go during off-peak times if you want a slightly calmer experience.

Grana (at The Langham, Boston)

Location & Vibe

Grana sits inside The Langham Boston, housed in what was once a grand, historic space (the former Boston Federal Reserve). The interior retains original architectural details—high ceilings, moldings, stately charm—balanced with modern touches.

Cuisine & Menu

The menu is approachable Italian with house-made pastas, seasonal ingredients, and brunch offerings. They serve breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner, creating a versatile all-day destination.

Experience & Notes

  • It’s considered “casual elegant”—suitable for both relaxed weekday meals and elevated dinners.
  • The setting is very photogenic: the architecture and interiors often get praise in reviews.
  • Because of its location in a hotel, it’s well suited to visitors staying nearby.

Long Bar & Terrace (Raffles Boston)

Location & Vibe

Perched on the 17th floor of Raffles Boston at 40 Trinity Place, Long Bar & Terrace is a rooftop oasis with skyline views that stretch across the South End and Back Bay. It’s elegant but relaxed — polished interiors, plush seating, and an outdoor terrace that feels especially magical during warmer hours.

Menu & Experience

They offer all-day dining — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — plus weekend brunch. Brunch (Saturdays & Sundays, 11:00 am–2:30 pm) is a highlight, with seasonal dishes, signature cocktails, and those views making every bite feel elevated. During my brunch there, I remember being swept up in the atmosphere — airy sky + soft light + good food. It felt like more than just a meal; it was a moment.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Hours are generous: open early in the morning (around 6:30 am weekdays; 7:00 am weekends) through late evening.
  • Reservations are recommended, especially for weekend brunch or for a terrace seat.
  • They serve a mix of New England classic bites (oysters, lobster rolls), cocktails with a view, and light fare that pairs well with the surroundings.
